So very tired…

OFI CRETE O
Greek Super League Standings:
1. Olympiakos 62 Points
2. Panathinaikos 53
3. PAOK 51
4. AEK 50
5. Larissa 39
It’s normally at this point of the season that the traditional auxiliary rush kicks in as AEK Athens close out another domestic season; titles and Champions League qualifying spots that are on the line through league finishes but this year, it’s establishing a position for ANOTHER mini-league with Panathinaikos, PAOK and likely Larissa for those lucrative European places.
I wonder, for the first time ever, where I will summon the energy to follow a side who are in actual fact probably playing their best football of the season and beginning to realize something approaching their potential as a collective.
The latest win over OFI Crete was crucial in that ground was gained on PAOK, though a title challenge for anyone other than Olympiakos (which basically renders use of the word “challenge” as pointless) seems far-fetched – and suddenly, following AEK begins to take its toll on mind and body.
For many of us in the diaspora, rousing ourselves at hours ranging from 2-4 am with work or study the next day becomes taxing; the other day I found myself content with watching Pantelis Kafes open the scoring against OFI before stumbling off to collect much-needed sleep.
A sign that my passion is wavering? That perhaps, after all of the sackings, failed sales and lack of direction, we fans need a break?
Perhaps.
Though it is likely more a reflection of a stale domestic scene where accusations of corruption and violence continue to rear their ugly heads and where the standard of football is at-times farcical.
However, when one takes up the mantle of fan, such considerations must be thrust aside for the sake of support – for that, is ultimately what we are all here for.
But we are so very tired…
PS. A third appearance off the bench of Nathan Burns at the weekend, who might just have a tangible future in Greece yet.
