Our best of the year…which sums it up really
By: Chris Paraskevas | December 22nd, 2008The fact that Sunday’s 3-2 home victory over Ergotelis was our best attacking performance of the year basically says it all about what has been a painful season.
And despite the post-match rambling of Dusan Bajevic, who claimed that the victory was deserved, the fact remains that the Cretans should have left Athens with a point for their troubles.
Karageorgiou’s men showed a cohesiveness and spark in attack that has been sorely lacking in our own ranks this season, the raw pace of Vasilios Koutsianikoulis perhaps only matched by Ignacio Scocco, though he is not as consistent as his Greek counterpart.
Nonetheless, two moments of class from Rafik Djebbour gave us an important point that restores the balance of power in Greece, the top four now containing ourselves, the gavroi, the vazeloi and the northerners, a make-up that is unlikely to change as the season progresses.
The Christmas break is probably the best thing that could happen for Bajevic at the moment, giving him time to assess who it is that he will keep over January and who it is that he will bring in.
Sensibly, he is looking towards European football and the Greek Cup, which might be a nice way of saying he has already started thinking about next season.
Much will depend on the backing he gets off the pitch, though…
The goals:
PS. Not sure if the video shows a blatant hand-ball by Vasilis Pliatsikas in the box, one that would have given the visitors the chance to equalize in injury time.
AEK Athens 3 (Djebbour 6’, Blanco 39’, Edinho 85′)
Ergotelis 2 (Fragoulakis 35’, Budimir 76′)
Line-ups:
AEK Athens: Saja, Basinas, Alves, Kyrgiakos, Juanfran (82’ Edinho), Kafes, Nsaliwa, Manduca (39’ Lagos), Scocco, Blanco (72’ Pliatsikas), Djebbour
Ergotelis: Daskalakis, Kordonouris, Ogunsoto, Junior, Kenedy (67’ Geladaris), Koutsianikoulis, Fernandes, Budimir, Plassnegger, Gialousis (87’ Vakouftsis), Fragoulakis (64’ Rogerio)
