In The Wars Against The God
By: Chris Paraskevas | April 11th, 2009Sunday’s home encounter with the ‘God Of War’ – namely Thessaloniki outfit Aris – sees AEK appropriately beset with a host of injury problems, with the likes of Nikos Georgeas excluded and key duo Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Rafik Djebbour struggling to regain their fitness ahead of the Greek Cup Final against Olympiakos on May 2.
And judging by the small highlights package that can be Youtubed from the Semi-Final against Panionios, it appears as though the understanding in a back-line devoid of Greece international and Conan-the-Barbarian-impersonator Kyrgiakos is particularly fragile.
Not good news ahead of an impending play-off series against the likes of PAOK and Panathinaikos that will decide if AEK have a shot at Champions League football next season, the importance of the financial windfall from which cannot be understated to a club who are still riddled with debts and running costs.
Victories in the last two matches, starting with Aris at home, would sent the side into the play-offs on something of a positive note and ensure they are still within touching distance of their opponents when it stars.
It really is a purely business end to the league season for Bajevic’s troops.
And it appears as though the aforementioned Edinho has apologized for his training ground spat and has been included in the initial squad for the weekend; whether his long-term future is sorted is another question altogether…
