Does anyone care?
By: Chris Paraskevas | March 21st, 2009AEK Athens have all but confirmed their place in the Greek Cup Final, where they are just as certain to face Olympiakos and lose 1-0 after a closely fought encounter (always the optimist is yours truly).
But if the stars were to for once align and AEK scored an uncertain victory, what would lifting the trophy really mean?
It is a competition which, like so many other domestic cup competitions (FA Cup * cough *) has lost its luster and meaning in the wake of the push for European places.
However, given AEK’s currently plight from a financial and administrative perspective and their lack of success in recent years, it might just be that this year’s final carries extra meaning.
Of course, barely anybody turned up to see the side beat Panthrakikos 3-1 in the first leg of the semi final, played in what were widely reported as torrid conditions at the OAKA but it is hard to believe that such whether would have deterred fans from a UEFA Champions League group stage encounter, par example.
And perhaps the state of Greek football is such that bringing such a clash back to Athens takes priority over silverware, though whether either are accomplished by season’s end remains to be seen…
