AEK To Sign Former Lazio Defender Matias Lequi

By: Chris Paraskevas | February 9th, 2009

In cooperation with Goal.com:

AEK Athens are set to sign out-of-contract Argentine defender Matias Lequi, according to reports in Greece.

The 27-year-old is understood to have arrived in Athens and is expected to sign with the Greek giants within the next couple of days.

Though the January transfer window has closed, Lequi is eligible to join because he has been without a club since the end of last season.

With AEK’s financial problems yet to be resolved, it is perhaps understandable that a transfer of this nature is the first that has been made by manager Dusan Bajevic since his arrival at the club earlier in the season.

It appears though, that he is about to acquire a player of experience and versatility.

Lequi can play as either a stopper or left-back, the latter having been a problem area this season. Former Real Zaragoza man Juanfran, who has been featuring as the left-sided full-back, has struggled in his first season in Greece.

The Argentine has had spells at River Plate, Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Celta de Vigo.
