AEK Sack Donis

By: Chris Paraskevas | November 16th, 2008

In cooperation with Goal.com:

AEK Athens have sacked manager Giorgios Donis just ten games into the Greek Super League season.

The 38 year-old former Greece international becomes the fifth managerial casualty of the Greek domestic scene this season, following his side’s 0-0 draw at home to struggling Panserraikos at the weekend.

The result has left AEK sitting in fifth place on the Greek Super League ladder, eight points behind league leaders Olympiakos who beat PAOK on Sunday evening.

Donis’ departure from the Athenian club was confirmed in an official statement on their website: “AEK announces the termination of its cooperation with manager Giorgios Donis by mutual consent.

“The club’s management would like to thank Mr. Donis for his contribution to the team and wishes him every success for the continuation of his career.”

Donis arrived at AEK during the summer after guiding former club Larissa to a Greek Cup victory over Panathinaikos and a memorable UEFA Cup run that saw them knock-out English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers.

However, his reign in Athens got off to the worst possible start during pre-season, as his side were dumped out of the same competition at the qualifying stages by AC Omonia of Cyprus.

Before that, Donis had to deal with the loss of the club’s three biggest stars: Nikos Lyberopoulos to Eintracht Frankfurt, Traianos Dellas to Anorthosis Famagusta (both on a free transfer) and Sokratis Papastathopoulos to Genoa.

After winning their opening league game at home to rivals Panathinaikos, Donis’ side generally struggled to find any form domestically, producing a string of unconvincing performances before stumbling to a 2-0 loss away against Olympiakos – their first of the season.

The manager has also had to deal with the departure of the man who initially had brought him to AEK, former president Demis Nikolaidis, who stunned the Greek domestic scene with his immediate resignation following AEK’s stunning comeback win over Asteras Tripolis – one that temporarily saved Donis’ job.

Jewix: the teams that have fired their coach this year are… OFI, Iraklis, Asteras Tripolis, AEK, Panionios.

Only Panionios has found a full-time replacement in Takis Lemonis — formerly with Olympiacos.

The rest all have care-take manages (currently), but Asteras Tripolis is edging close to signing Dusan Bajevic — this big three in Greece will know him very well.

I am sure AEK will have this sorted out before the weekend, but I think Nikos Kostenoglou would make a proper replacement for Donis. He did a very sound job as care-take manager last year.
